Welcome to Tokyo, Japan. January, 1991. The world has entered the technology era, portable phones, home computers, internet, video games. Japan quickly became the epicenter of the latest and greatest. Companies and factories flourished. Where money was, people followed. And while many rose to live a comfortable, happy, and delightful life from this new found money... Others did not. You see, money has this effect on people that can't be outdone. People will do anything for it. And when it starts slipping into the wrong hands, it's impossible to stop. Benethe the day time laborers and the double-shift workers, a seedy underbelly of syndicates exists. Narctics, black market, organized crime, money laundering, you name it and it's been growing as fast as the upper world economy. While many do it just to stay alive, there's those who make it their posh lifestyle. Either way, there's only one question. What would you do if the money was good enough?
JAN 29 2021: Welcome!! ƎLEMENT has been open for two weeks now and we're so happy to see such a bright beginning! If you're new feel free to drop into the discord and say hi before joining.
[attr="class","temp_cont"] Meet Sugawara Yua, one of the eldest out of 10 siblings conceived by Sugawara Kenta- the leader of a fire worshipping cult hidden within a tightly-knit neighbourhood in Yokohama. Due to such a peculiar upbringing, it’s no surprise that Yua herself is quite the odd individual. Often described as stoic, intimidating and uncaring, she has built quite the reputation for herself, especially amongst her siblings, mannerly clambering to the suitable title of ‘scary older sister’. Ever since her father passed in a detrimental accident, alongside many other cult members, Yua spent her adult years rebuilding what she could from the rubble left behind, striving to fulfil her fathers ideals, and essentially become just like him in hopes of making him proud. Even as a fully grown woman, Yua still competes for her fathers adoration and approval, trapping her in an endless cycle of idolising a dead man.
[attr="class","temp_head"] + FRIENDS | ENEMIES
[attr="class","temp_cont"] It is no wild surprise that Yua faces quite the trouble when making friends. Upon first greeting, it is more common than not for her to act hostile and mannerless, especially in situations where she isn’t the one in the position of power. Friends, enemies, they all simply blur into one monochromatic mess for this intimidatingly relaxed woman, causing her to be unbothered in actively seeking relationships. Yua is not even close with her vast amount of siblings. The only person she has ever called her friend was her father, and now that he’s gone, the list is empty. With defensive walls as immovable as a boulder and a naturally aggressive tongue, Yua often finds herself crossing the wrong side of people much more often than the right.
[attr="class","temp_head"] + LOVERS
[attr="class","temp_cont"] Finding itself in a similar predicament to the relationships stated before, intimate relationships almost seem impossible for Yua. She is so caught up in her own little world that it would simply be foolish to allow another person in. Yua is not fooled by seduction or temptation, for her power-hungry mind would not allow herself to stoop to such low levels of desperation. Perhaps there is someone out there who could be the ying to her yang, but for now, Yua’s heart remains cruely trapped in a prison cell, and she was the one who threw away the key.

[attr="class","dorado2"] All my troubles on a burning pile, all lit up, and I start to smile.[break][break] Yua strongly believed that in every conversation amongst a pair of strangers, one always prevailed in terms of dominance. In some, a fight for power was held, like two opposing bulls locking horns in competition over territory, whereas others, well- they were more… one sided. For example: the introductory meeting between an antsy doctor and a stoic cult member. The current interaction was not sparring even an ounce of battle, which was surprisingly new considering the behaviour Yua had been presented with when confronting other citizens of Tokyo. It was so backwards that the salmon-haired individual cowering before her may as well have handed Yua his own spine- dressed up all pretty in a little gift wrapped box. Pathetic was an understatement, but the power-obsessed woman was never going to turn down one's submission, no matter how indisputably it came about.
A similar feeling to that of consolation coursed its way throughout Yua’s lengthy figure when the stranger revealed his intentions. A doctor certainly wasn’t up high on her list of guesses on who he could’ve been, but then again ‘professional weirdo’ had been her first. She wasn’t that far off, honestly. Despite her seemingly unbothered approach to the current situation, a minor sliver of doubt had perused through Yua’s mind, mentally questioning the validity of Shuichi’s claims. Was there something more sinister going on here? Perhaps a robbery or kidnapping was about to be set in motion. “No- it can’t be. He can barely let go of a proper sentence without stumbling over his words.” Yua thought critically, squashing her own personal concerns within the same amount of seconds she had used to conjure them up in.
“Sugawara Yua,” The woman dryly stated, conforming to the social pleasantries that she otherwise would’ve disregarded if it weren’t for her own personal intrigue. “You must be very observant to have noticed such a minor detail.” Monotone words fell once again, paired with the action of soulless, inky orbs eyeing the doctor up and down. In the same breath Yua seemed to discredit the severity of the child's injury, as well as partake in her own fun of mockingly toying with her new acquaintance. “I was unaware that the new way of getting your diagnosis was to be spied on in the streets by a doctor,” The corners of Yua’s lips became upturned ever so slightly, signalling that of a ridiculing smile hidden beneath a façade of false pleasantries.
“But it seems to be working out for you.” A lengthy, eerie pause choked the air like poison, all the while Yua’s peculiar smile faded. “How lovely.”
Urging the child forwards after he had been shielded behind the woman’s impressively sizable figure, she positioned him firmly at her side. “Come on now, show Doctor Morita your hand,” Yua blankly commanded, unable to disguise any sinister tendrils that wrapped around her vocals. “It’s nothing more than a silly little oven burn from a couple of days ago, right?” The ashy blonde nodded her head, looking for the child to do the same in agreement. Anyone with common sense could see that something strange was going on here.
“Children…” Yua directed her dull orbs back to the salmon-haired doctor. “So clumsy.”
[attr="class","dorado2"] All my troubles on a burning pile, all lit up, and I start to smile.[break][break] “sorry about drowning,” you say. you chose where to eat and, while your girlfriend seems fine and is acting like a good sport, you feel sorry. the food is good, so fresh, but the drowning. your girlfriend grows increasingly pale. the blood vessels burst in your eyes.
stock text! “i love you,” you say. it hurts, what you’re doing. your girlfriend’s hair dances around her. a crab comes along and pinches her elbow.
“hey,” she says to the crab.
you thought that meeting here would make it easier for your parents to come out and join you. you want them to meet this person. it’s still too far for your parents, though, and they’re not here, and you realize how hard it is to maintain close ties with family when you and your partner were born in different places. such vastly different places.
“i love you, too,” your girlfriend says, and then her heart stops and she floats away from you. a current catches her. a whale bumps into her, but she continues on. soon after, your heart also stops and into the current you go. and then you and she are dead in the same current. and going home.
[attr="class","dorado2"] All my troubles on a burning pile, all lit up, and I start to smile.[break][break] A chilling evening breeze weaved its way through the busy bodies parading about the Shinjuku district, reaching out to gently rustle through a fair-haired lady’s short strands as she marched through the bustling streets. Yua had once again found herself in Tokyo, however this time it was on her own accord. Life back in Yokohama was average at most, but sometimes even Yua was hungry for the escapism that she was slowly allowing herself to be drip fed. In the back of her mind she always reminded herself of where her loyalties lay, never allowing herself to stray too far from home, especially with the amount of those looking up to her for leadership and answers in place of her father. As willing as she was to empty her own lungs and breathe air back into the cult in order to keep it as alive as it once were, Yua couldn’t deny that these little evening escapades were giving her a break that she didn’t know she needed. A few months ago, the woman never even dared to place a foot outside of the tightly knit neighbourhood, being weighed deep down with the overwhelming fear of betraying her dead father- just like all her measly little siblings had done as soon as they were presented with the chance. Yet here she was, stomping down the streets of Shinjuku, looking as positively dead pan as usual.
Continuing to wander, Yua’s soulless, dark gaze soon fell upon a cosy looking café that was placed alongside the strip of an amalgamation of other bars and clubs alike. It emitted a warm, glowing light that offered a stark contrast to the wintry environment she was currently engulfed in, seemingly coaxing her inside with an inviting hug. There wasn’t much thought put into the motion before Yua’s long, lean legs began carrying the rest of her body forwards, slowly approaching the café with nonchalant grace. That was until a splash of pale lilac entered her view, causing her to slow down ever so slightly. There were a variety of small gatherings of people lingering about outside the café, but one person standing on their lonesome had caught Yua’s attention in particular. With furrowed brows she watched as the seemingly younger girl fumbled about, patting herself down multiple times, all the while a cigarette sat dormant between the grasp of her lips.
Now, Yua was never one to go out of her way to help strangers; nor people she was well acquainted with for that matter, but something about watching the girl struggle in a position she had been in many times before was proving oddly difficult for her to ignore. So with evident reluctance that she was unable to disguise, the lithe woman stomped over, a stoic look plastered upon her unique facial features. In the same course of movements, Yua swiftly shoved her hand into her own trouser pocket, reaching for the lighter that she never failed to have on her person; her fathers lighter.
“Hey, kid.” Came a monotone rumble from her vocal cords, slightly raised in order to be heard over the surrounding chorus of voices. Her condescending choice of words already highlighted the fact that Yua saw herself as superior, alongside the fact that she had guessed that the girl standing before her was younger than herself. There was nothing welcoming about her tone, despite the contrasting action of help that she was providing, which made the interaction seem even more odd than it was at face value. Yua’s strong features scanned over the other females almost as though she were deciding whether she liked her or not. Looking at Yua’s face, dislike was written all over it. This girl was too pretty. Yua didn’t like that. Looking down upon her in an intimidating fashion, Yua spoke once more.
“Need this?” Accompanying her dead pan words, the tall woman’s arm stretched outwards before the stranger, presenting the ancient looking lighter clasped between her digits.
[attr="class","dorado2"] All my troubles on a burning pile, all lit up, and I start to smile.[break][break] A sigh of annoyance slipped past Yua’s lips after she felt resistance once again, roughly tugging at the boy's hand that she continuously held in her inescapable grasp. “What did I just say?” Yua spoke up, slightly raising her voice in contrast to last time's grumpy mumble. This time, she averted her gaze, directing it strictly downwards to make eye contact with the little vermin of a child. “I said, stop being gre-,” The woman’s voice abruptly cut off as she came to the realisation that the boy wasn’t even facing forwards, but instead turning back to look at something behind them. Yua’s brows knitted in displeasure before she slowly swivelled her neck, scanning in the direction that the kid was so eagerly fixated upon. At first all that met the eye were busy bystanders going about their day with copious amounts of shopping bags at hand, but that was until Yua noticed a flash of salmon locks. The boy beside her offered a sweet smile to the strange man, accompanied by a frantic wave.
Similarly to a rooftop sniper locking in on its target, Yua’s soulless, black gaze drilled holes into the foreign man, taking in his appearance as she eyed him up and down. His lengthy apricot locks and odd clothing sense made him stick out like a blot on a landscape, causing any of Yua worries about this being a man of danger to evaporate. Nonetheless, this didn’t subtract from the fact that he had caused a disruption to the fluidity of their day trip, and Yua was definitely not one to let even the slightest of inconveniences go without being squashed. The reason as to why he was so interested in the pairing was a complete mystery, which caused Yua to become intrigued. Had he been following them? For how long?
“I don’t suppose your parents ever taught you proper manners.” The fair-haired lady spoke out boldly, lifting her vocals in order to allow the cowardly looking man to hear from the distance that was between them. Jerking the boy's hand once again, Yua turned and began walking towards him, pulling the child with her as she took her time with each step, inching closer like a predator to its prey. The strangers features became more prominent now, and Yua took her time drinking them in. Gentle green eyes, soft features. Who was this man? Yua’s thinly stretched lips parted once more, “You know it's rather rude to stare?” Like a closed book, Yua’s expression was practically unreadable. She seemed relaxed, but in the most intimidating of possible ways. The tension of the one-sided conversation could virtually be seen above them, hanging like a cloud of thunderous storms as the short haired woman inched closer, the boy still glued to her hip. She tucked him behind her slightly, almost trying to implant the false idea that this man had scared the kid.
Like a giant Yua towered, inching slightly over the unknown stranger who seemed odd in a variety of indescribable ways. He didn’t seem like the type to retaliate, so Yua took advantage of the situation and could almost virtually be seen playing with it in her power-starved grasp. “Is there anything I can help you with, Sir? You seem a little…” Her distinctive voice trailed off slightly, paired with her eyes flashing away quickly as if she were lost in thought, all before her dominant gaze came crashing down once more. “Lost.” And with that final word, an invisible string tugged ever so delicately at the corner of Yua’s lips, eeking out an uneasy smirk.
[attr="class","dorado2"] All my troubles on a burning pile, all lit up, and I start to smile.[break][break] Yua hated children.
So it came as a startling source of surprise when the towering, fair-haired woman could be spotted marching down the streets of Shibuya 渋谷 with just that by her side. It was an early weekend afternoon, and the two residents from Yokohama had made their way out of their hometown and travelled to Tokyo’s infamous shopping district. This was common practice for Yua- to take one of the cults youngsters, or occasionally elders, out on supply stocking trips. Of course there were sufficient locations for this to be done back in Yokohama, but it was ideal to allow the children to visit places that were new to them, in order to experience the corrupt world they lived in.
Resembling that of a military general, Yua strode down the active streets with the child by her side. The small neighbourhood from which they came was an incredibly tight-knit community, largely for the wrong reasons, but this meant that everyone knew everyone. The little one glued to her side was the son of a long-serving couple who were closely acquainted with Yua’s father, just like everyone else. On paper, it seemed probable that the two would get along due to these circumstances, but Yua simply despised kids, nor could she handle the thought of holding a conversation with one. What on earth would they speak about?Dinosaurs? Their favourite story book? Yua would rather sit and watch paint dry than converse with a snotty-nosed child. As if embodying Yua’s negative thoughts in physical form, the older woman’s large hand roughly clasped around the child’s, who barely even measured up to the height of Yua’s hip. This allowed the boy’s free hand to dangle by his side, sporting the uneasy image of minor burns upon his otherwise untouched skin. Yua was aware, yet completely unphased by this, as accidents like this were common back home. It was more embarrassing than anything, for her to be patrolling about with this miscalculation of a human.
Continuing down the bustling streets the unlikely pair walked, occasionally stopping to observe items through shop windows that Yua would soon tear the boy away from. “Stop being greedy.” Yua would bluntly murmur beneath her breath, casting the emptiest of side glances condescendingly down at the child, stopping him in his tracks completely. Her voice was deep and monotone, leaving no room for contemplation. Similar to stone, Yua’s uniquely carved out features remained still, showing little to no emotion as she turned her gaze back to the concrete avenue before them. Every minute that entered them further into the afternoon caused Yua to become envious of those back home. She would much rather be doing as she pleased in the familiar comfort of her home, but instead she was running errands and acting as a babysitter.
With that same stoic look on her face, and the boy practically being dragged by Yua’s forceful, soldier-like movements, the peculiar duo continued to make their way down the main street in hopes of finding a grocery store. The quicker this little adventure was drawn to a close, the better it was for both parties.
"Treating my memory of you like a fire,"[break][break]
A young Yua’s face became illuminated by the gentle, warming glow of a freshly mustered flame that now flicked before her, painting the child in a radiant light that seemed to melt even her coldest of features into that of slight comfort. --- It was a hushed summer evening within a small neighbourly town in Yokohama, and Sugawara Kenta had ventured into his back garden with his first offspring. The two children, led by hand, eagerly followed their fathers footsteps as he knelt down on the grass, urging them to do the same. Little to no words were exchanged between the trio as the father began gathering dry sticks that seemed conveniently piled alongside the fence post, arranging them meticulously, as though this were a practice he had carried out a hundred times prior. His daughter, Yua, eagerly followed his polished movements as she observed her father reach into his pocket, revealing a handful of cotton and a decorated lighter. The young girl watched in awe, as though he were performing a magic trick before her very eyes. Soon, a small fire had been birthed, and the silence of their gathering was now filled with the occasional crackling of the flames, a sound that would become all too familiar to Yua and her twin brother, Hiroaki. For a while they simply watched as the raw flame danced before their child-like gazes in an enticing performance. The orange glow that emanated from the burning pile felt like a warm hug, comforting Yua’s heart as she hugged her knees and remained transfixed. The only words that were spoken that night came from their father. “Live by the fire, die by the fire.”[break][break]
Being one of many children produced by the esteemed leader (Sugawara Kenta) of a small town cult was never a challenge in the eyes of Yua growing up. From a young age she willingly placed herself in his shadow in hopes that one day he would be proud of the child he had created during his first, yet not last, relationship with a woman. Adoration was a weak work to describe just how much Yua looked up to her father, yet obsession was too far. Yua’s childhood was fairly uneventful if one were to look past the fact that she was born into a fire-worshipping neighbourhood with cultist tendencies. School and home life was average, and she was surrounded by one or two close friends, however challenges began to present themselves in other forms as she grew older. Problems like her twin brother. Sugawara Hiroaki. As the children grew older, favouritism and priorities became clear as day. Deep-set hatred began to brew in Yua’s heart as she became aware of the fact that the competition for their fathers approval was rigged and unfair. Both children were adored by their father, but Yua a little less, simply due to the fact that she was a female. Couldn’t he see how much she idolised him? Could he not see the lengths she went to in order to be just like him?[break][break]
Several years later, during the cults crusade to burn down an abandoned hospital in hopes of sending a message to the government, detrimental outcomes prevailed. Copious amounts of gasoline set the building ablaze, just as planned, however one reckless command would cause the aleatory death of many. Kenta had encouraged his mindless followers to stay and embrace the flames as they grew wildly, leading to those engulfed in the fire to pass away. Kenta was one of many lost on that deleterious night, causing 10 children to live without the presence of a father for the remainder of their time on earth. For some, the taste of freedom was irresistible, causing them to escape the confines of the toxic community they were brought up in. Siblings who fled after the death of their father were placed on a black list in Yua’s mind, illustrating her disappointment in how quick they were to abandon ship. Yua, of course, stayed behind. In her childhood home she continued to live, rebuilding what she could from the rubble of the community in hopes of continuing her father’s legacy. Even as a fully grown woman, Yua still competes for her fathers adoration and approval, trapping her in an endless cycle of idolising a dead man.[break][break]
PERSONALITY ⋆
"let it burn out, don't fight it,"[break][break]
After spending her childhood years mimicking her father, Yua adopted certain personality traits from Kenta, like his stoic nature when leading, devotion to his craft, and most surprisingly, his dry humour. At times, Yua can appear unbothered and uninterested, mostly because she is. With her walls highly built and hostility serving as a defence, it seems to be rather difficult to get any form of humanity from her. Despite this, Yua appears quite relaxed more often than not, but in the most intimidating of ways. Armed with silence as her weapon and a glare as lifeless as a rock, Yua’s general vibe is rather frightening, causing her to scare off potential friends, or even innocent bystanders. She lacks the natural want for a romantic relationship, purely due to how she was brought up, with her father and the cult being the only thing she required in life.[break][break]
Dealing with grief is different for everyone, and so when her beloved father passed away, Yua’s personality took the spotlight. She never cried once, or showed regret, nor any form of mournful tendencies. For the man she idolised so dearly to die a preventable death, Yua almost seemed militarian when dealing with it. She moved on like a soldier who had lost someone who was nothing but a fellow comrade to her, despite the relationship between the two clearly being incredibly strong. Shovelling away the grief she was experiencing like dirt on a grave, Yua continued, creating her sturdy and stoic defences in order to continue what her father had begun.[break][break]
In the present, Yua has carried forth these strong personality traits. Surrounding her is an air of suffocating, unspoken confidence and judgemental thoughts. The silence of her dominating presence is enough to fill up any room,- something that was adopted through having to fight to be heard growing up with 10 siblings. Being one of the eldest, Yua has taken these tendencies with her throughout her adult life, often appearing as mature and authoritative, with inklings of a protective- older-sister streak.[break][break]
APPEARANCE ⋆
"setting fire with my lighter."[break][break]
Standing at an impressive height of 6’2” (190cm), it is no doubt that Yua towers over most, aiding in her desire to be viewed as superior in the eyes of others. It seems that in the Sugawara family, Yua robbed all the height that came from her father. She carries herself well, always standing up straight with perfect posture, shoulders back and chin held high. As if her fixation with trying to be like Kenta couldn’t get any worse, Yua even cut her previously lengthy, blonde hair into the short, under-cut style she sports today, fashioning it in a similar way that her father did. Yua’s dress sense is rather simple. She can often be seen wearing larger, more masculine clothing, like suit jackets and button-up shirts paired with trousers. Being extremely tall, slender, and dressing rather masculine, in the blur of a moment, some siblings often do confuse Yua with their deceased father, but she doesn’t mind. In fact, in a sickly sense, it makes her proud.[break][break]
EXTRAS ⋆
The one physical item that Yua received from her father was the same embellished lighter that Kenta had used on the night where he showed Hiroaki and her fire for the first time. Despite its age and ancient appearance, Yua treasures it greatly and often keeps it in her pocket, just like her father once did.[break][break]
