A young orphan on the streets of Beijing was not a rare sight back then, especially after the reparations of war left many women without a husband and many children without a father. Little Jie was one of the various kids that were dropped off on the doorstep of an orphanage in the midst of the night by a mother who couldn’t afford to care for her child. Overpopulation was a dire issue- without proper government funding many of the children inhabiting the orphanage were left without a bed to sleep in or food to eat. The caretakers were thoroughly exhausted and constantly in a state of stress, often resorting to corrupt means in order to make some extra cash. Her early memories consisted of begging on the side of the road for some extra change to hand off to the caretakers or stealing food from any unlucky street vendors.

The children were often left to their own devices, many slipping away from the orphanage for days just to return days later without any adults taking notice. Jie was one of these rambunctious kids, often disappearing and living on the streets for as long as possible until she buckled under the rough circumstances and was forced to return. She often ran with a specific group, one that grew closer throughout the years as they stuck to each other like glue. From a scrawny little kid to a developed teenager, they had their own little family within the bustling children of the orphanage. However, nothing good lasts forever. The self-proclaimed leader of their group, a boy only two years older than her, was adopted into an upper class family and was forced to leave his friends behind. Without him, they soon began to drift apart in the pursuit of financial gain.

When Jie was finally of legal age, she began to sell herself on the corner of the dingy streets in hopes to save up enough money to leave the orphanage and get an education for herself. Her pure mind and heart kept her going through the tough times, and soon it would allow for a suave business man to slip his way into her heart faster than she could realize. He spoke promises of saving her from her corrupt lifestyle like a true knight in shining armor. Although it took a couple of years, he remained true to his promise and bought them a cozy little house where she was more than happy to dwell in while he traveled around the world for his business. Soon, she fell pregnant and gave birth to a healthy baby girl named Mei Fan. They were a lovely little family, although the neighborhood was full of whispers about how scandalous it was that she was giving birth out of wedlock. He had yet to propose, but the poor woman was naive enough to believe that one day he would.

Shortly after the birth of her daughter, she was once again blessed with the gift of a child- this time, a son. While most couples would be rejoicing at their luck, she began to notice how distant her lover was becoming. Mei was quite attached to her father, even if she was only able to spend time with him once a week, so when his visits became less frequent by the years she petulantly blamed her mother. As she grew into a young lady, at the tender age of twelve, their world came crashing down when they awoke to find all of his items gone. All that was left behind was a note, one that detailed his long-lasting deceit and the sum of money he would leave behind to support his makeshift family. Mei’s mother was the first to find the note, howling in pain the second that she read about his Japanese wife that lived abroad and her four kids. No apologies, no expressions of love or regret towards his children, there was no sign of guilt in his writing.

Mei was just as heartbroken as her mother, who drowned herself in booze in an attempt to forget the deceit of her lover. This left her daughter with the role of bread winner and caretaker, having to take up a plethora of jobs and watch over her younger brother. The rift between mother and daughter expanded as time passed and her mother’s conditioned worsened. Soon enough she would become catatonic, barely taking care of herself or acknowledging her children. Mei herself grew cynical, being forced to swallow down her trauma and sacrifice her childhood to raise her brother. Fortunately, she was intelligent enough to begin constructing a plan to leave China and her mother behind- after learning enough Japanese and saving up enough money she would fly her brother and herself to Japan. Forced to drop out of high school so she could take on more jobs to keep her plan on track, by eighteen she was able to save up more than enough to afford some plane tickets and a month worth of hotel rooms.

Hand in hand, Mei and her brother expected to live a new grand life with the father that abandoned them years ago.

But life never works out the way you want it to. It didn’t take long for them to locate her father in Japan, but once they did they were met with feigned confusion and the slamming of the door right in their face. He wanted nothing to do with the children he carelessly created, any semblance of a loving father was long gone. On their last dime, the siblings were almost forced onto streets when a middle-aged associate strolled up to them with a dubious offer. Mei’s beauty was foreign and unmatched, making her a lovely candidate for the illegal world of compensated dating. Offers flew in left and right, men offering to wine and dine her, pay for a comfortable lifestyle, keep her and her brother off the streets- as long as she agreed to be their lovely arm candy at any time of the day.
